Vascular ultrasound is a diagnostic procedure that shows your body's inner workings.
Using “sound” in order to “see” better? It may seem unusual, but ultrasound is one of the ways the doctors at Vision Imaging of Kingston can see inside your body and even watch your internal organs working in real-time on a video screen.

Ultrasound is a painless medical imaging technique that uses high frequency sound waves and their echoes to produce images of the inside of your body, providing immediate results to the technologist. In most cases, the process is simple and straightforward: a gel is applied to your skin to help the sound waves pass through to a smooth probe which is pressed to your body. An image of the inside of your body then appears on the video monitor.

“Essentially, ultrasound is based upon the same principle of sonar that boats and submarines use,” said Vision Imaging Ultrasound Technologist Crystal Iddings. “When a sound wave strikes an object, it bounces back, or echoes. Measuring the echo waves makes it possible to determine how far away an object is, what its size and shape may be,
and so on.”

Ultrasound can be used for a variety of diagnostic purposes.
“Ultrasound guided biopsy” is a procedure that uses an ultrasound imaging device to find an abnormal area of tissue and guide its removal.

Iddings added that because ultrasound images are captured digitally in real-time and can be viewed as video, they can show the structure and movement of the body’s internal organs.

Vascular ultrasound procedures can even show the blood flowing through a person’s vessels, which can be useful in diagnosing circulatory problems.
